Sasha Sonnbichler is a South Africa–based multi-instrumentalist, educator, and composer known for his contribution to jazz, marimba, and community music education. His early passion for music began with guitar studies, which later led him to formal training at the American Institute of Music in Vienna, where he earned a performance degree. He went on to complete a Master’s in Arranging from Berklee College of Music and later obtained an MBA in Music and the Creative Industries.
Returning to South Africa, Sonnbichler became deeply involved in promoting accessible music education. He served as the Creative Director at the Hillbrow Music Centre in Johannesburg, where he developed inclusive programmes for young musicians from diverse backgrounds. His dedication to arts education and cultural development has made him a respected figure in the country’s music-education landscape.
As a performer, Sasha’s versatility spans jazz, classical, fusion, and world music, with his artistry evident in albums such as Ndaa / Greetings and Tan Huts. He has also performed as a lead guitarist in The Lion King: The Musical (Johannesburg) and contributed to numerous ensemble and solo projects.
Beyond performance, Sonnbichler is recognised for his marimba and steelpan arrangements, festival adjudication, and mentorship of emerging artists. His work celebrates cultural dialogue through sound, blending African rhythms with global jazz influences. Through his teaching and performances, Sasha continues to inspire creativity, unity, and excellence within South Africa’s vibrant music scene.
